Lately McDonald’s has been in the news for all of the wrong reasons, from their woefully out of touch with reality human resources page, to the type of food they serve(nothing new here) and their underpaid workers who likely work harder at their job than said CEO.
Their latest misstep: Trying to get into the chicken wing business.
Yes, McDonald’s, the place best known for its burgers and fries, getting involved with chicken wings. There are three main reasons to stop off at a fast food place such as McDonald’s:
- Low Prices
- Larger quantities of food
Why do McDonald’s chicken wings not fit in with these three reasons to eat fast food?
- Not cheap: McDonald’s is charging over a dollar per wing (three for $3.69, five for $5.59, and 10 for $9.69 to be specific), you can get multiple sandwich options off of their “Dollar and More” menu for the same price as a single, solitary chicken wing.
- Not a lot of food: How many wings does it take for you to feel like you have had a satisfying meals worth? I bet it’s more than three… Five may work for a number of people, but at $5.59 for that number of wings, you can spend just a bit more and get a value meal with a sandwich, fries and a drink.
- Convenience: Wings are not convenient to eat or dispose of. Do you ever eat a chicken wing one handed? Would you ever consider eating a chicken wing while driving? And think of all those annoying bones…McNuggets these aren’t.
As it turns out, this chicken wing escapade on McDonald’s part has not gone well and now McDonald’s is stuck with 10 million pounds of unsold chicken wings they have to sell or do something with.
There was one other complaint customers had about the wings, they considered them too spicy. Personally, that would be a selling point for me as lots of people have bland preferences and the McDonald’s wings would probably taste pretty darn good to me as I like a bit of kick to my wings and other foods.
I’m sure it’s just a matter of time till McDonald’s comes up with some other new and amusing and just not quite appropriate food offering. McSubs anyone?
